Pirates Suffer 6-4 Home Defeat
|
The timely hitting of Jim Wheatley helped the Miami Marlins down the Pittsburgh Pirates, 6-4. Wheatley slugged 2 home runs, while scoring 3 and driving in 2 for the Marlins. Eric LeLacheur was the winning pitcher. Over 5 innings, he allowed 3 runs on 5 hits, with 4 walks and 3 strikeouts. The Marlins, at 19-14, lead by one game in their division.
It could have been a different outcome for Miami, had it not been for Rocky Layton, the 30-year old third baseman . Layton contributed a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth inning to put Miami up, 4-3.
"It feels good, just a great win all around," Wheatley said after the game.
